Alkaline Saponification for Heavy Stamping Oils: The Water-Break-Free Test
Why high-saponification surfactant cleaners achieve 100% water break-free surfaces without parent metal attack or toxic solvent fumes.

Key Engineering Takeaways for Plant Managers:
- The Water-Break-Free test is the quickest shop floor check: water must sheet continuously across the part for 30 seconds without beading.
- Modern chlorinated and sulfurized stamping lubricants resist standard solvent wiping and require alkaline saponification at 60°C - 75°C.
- YCI-Clean H70 incorporates non-ionic surfactants that emulsify oils and prevent them from redepositing as parts are withdrawn.
- Ultrasonic agitation accelerates oil displacement in threaded holes, deep recesses, and welded joints by up to 400%.
In metal pretreatment, the cleanliness of the incoming component dictates the success of every subsequent stage. If even a microscopic monomolecular film of stamping lubricant or mineral drawing oil remains on the steel, acid pickling will not etch uniformly, activation salts cannot anchor, and phosphating crystals will fail to nucleate.
The industry gold standard for assessing metal cleanliness before phosphating is the Water-Break-Free Test (ASTM F22). Following the alkaline cleaning and water rinsing stages, the component is observed as water drains from its surface. If the water forms a continuous, unbroken film for 25 to 30 seconds, the surface is chemically clean. If the water beads, pulls away, or separates into droplets, oil contamination is still present.
Traditional solvent wipe-downs using thinner or diesel are not only hazardous fire risks with toxic VOC emissions, but they also spread a thin film of oil across the entire panel rather than removing it.
YCI-Clean H70 utilizes hot alkaline saponification. Caustic builders chemically convert animal and vegetable fatty esters into water-soluble soaps, while specialized synthetic non-ionic surfactants encapsulate mineral oils into stable micelles that rinse away cleanly in the cascading water rinse.
For complex automotive stamped parts with blind holes and fold-overs, combining YCI-Clean H70 or YCI-Clean NT-10 with ultrasonic immersion bath agitation guarantees 100% water-break-free surfaces every single cycle.
